Review: Last Chance Books Is A Struggle To Read

Madeline Moore has spent basically her whole life in her family’s bookstore Books & Moore. She can’t bear the thought of not scanning books, stacking shelves, and snacking in this store, her sanctuary. But when a rival bookstore opens across the street with a hot employee, Jasper Hamada, who she has grown to hate, Madeline is determined to do everything she can to keep the store open, and beat the competition.

Last Chance Books by Kelsey Rodkey is touted to be “enemies to lovers”. Sure, Madeline hates Jasper. But, Jasper doesn’t really hate her, he just wants to date her. It’s more about teenagers pranking each other than forming a romance.

The cute cover was one of the best things about the book, and the pranks they pulled on each other were funny.

I really wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, and the cover looked so promising. But, I just got bored really easily. The plot was really predictable and the characters were not really likeable. Madeline, especially, was very bratty, and Jasper had no depth except being a clothing designer. I also thought the dialogue was cringe, as a teenager I know that 12-13 year olds would say some of the things that 18-19 year olds were saying. I am surprised I didn’t give up on this book.

I would probably recommend this book to people who don’t give up on books easily or aren’t super critical about books.

Two out of four roses.
