I’ve read practically every book on my shelf, so when looking for a new book to review for my six-year anniversary of running Elena Reads, The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch caught my eye.
I was surprised that I had never reviewed the series. I LOVED these books in elementary school, so re-reading them was so nostalgic and enjoyable. The books will remind you of how innocent and magical childhood was, and how books can let your imagination run wild at any age.
Though the author said not to tell anyone about the series, I will.
The first book starts off with a warning: DON’T READ THIS BOOK! It contains a big secret (or several) that must not be shared. When I was younger, this just made me more excited to read these books. The Secret Series tells the story of two eccentric characters: a boy named Max-Ernest and a girl named Cass, and the adventures they go on surrounding a cult that is hiding something, and they will do anything to keep it secret.
The way the author narrated this series felt like it was a true story, especially because he told readers that he couldn’t disclose the characters’ real names and locations. I thought this made each of the books in the five-part series really entertaining. He even plays the part by using a pseudonym, saying it would be dangerous if he revealed his real name. I loved his writing style and his world-building. I don’t think this book would be the same if it was written in first person.
I also loved how each book was based on one of our five senses, which was a big part of the story. (I misplaced book three, but I recall it being very captivating too.)
If you like A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, you will definitely enjoy Bosch. Snicket and Bosch’s writing styles are very similar. Both series have a good plot, amazing characters, and funny moments.
I read these books in third grade, but I would say that this book is for readers 10 and older.
Four out of four roses!
