Honey Thomas is a multifaceted author, counselor, and grandmother. She loves reading, traveling, and brunching with her good girlfriends. She has written several adult fiction books, and even a self help book. She decided to start publishing picture books because she “saw a need for black children to see themselves as authors.” Plus, her GrandBoys give her lots of inspiration! Read below to see Thomas’ advice for writers, her favorite books when she was younger, and the one of the reasons she writes books!

Question: You told me your biggest inspiration for your books has been your grandkids. Tell me a little about them.

Answer: They are the highlights of my life. My five GrandBoys are 12, 10, 8, and the twins are 3. They all are so smart and funny. They love coming to “Honey’s” house.

Q: What were your favorite books when you were a teenager.

A: Wow, let’s see…As a teen I loved reading books by V.C. Andrews, as well as books by Iceberg Slim, and Donald Goines.  (Some would say I was to young to read books by the latter two, however they were so edgy and real…lol, I couldn’t put them down)

Q: Any advice for writers looking to write a picture book?

A: I would say have fun writing. Make the story/pics fun and educational for the reader.

Q: Can you tell me more about your adult books? Why did you make the switch to picture books?

A: My adult books are fictional, but real life relatable. There’s drama, family, friends, intimacy, love, crime, and sorts. I also wrote a self-help book about being your best self and navigating through day to day living. All of my books have some form of message for the reader to receive. I added children’s books to my resume because I saw a need for black children to see themselves as authors. As well as the fact that, my GrandBoys give me so much material to write about. I told them they are famous because their names/faces are in books!

Q: What is your favorite book genre?

A: Fiction for sure. (Urban, romance, and crime).

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: Just that I love reading and writing. The way my mind escapes in the book when I’m reading is the best feeling ever. Which is one of the reasons I became an author…to give my readers that same feeling of escape!
