Dumpling Days Takes Readers On A Delightful Food Journey

Posted by

My favorite food is sushi. I can’t even explain why I like it, but it is so delicious! When it’s my birthday or the last day of school or whenever we go out for Japanese, I pick sushi. My favorite sushi is California rolls.

I think I love it as much as the main character loves dumplings in the book Dumpling Days. She gets them every chance she gets. They make her feel better after a bad day, and even make her want to eat dumplings every day!

Author Grace Lin creates an interesting story about Grace (aka Pacy) and her family who are going on a trip to Taiwan where her parents were born. This book is sort of like a travel journal, and Grace records every moment of it.

During her trip to Taiwan she eats many different dumplings, but still can’t decide which is her favorite, unlike me and my favorite food.

She writes about how different Taiwan is from America— from the bathrooms to the restaurants. She also writes about the fun things does like learning to paint bamboo and getting an identity stamp. Grace’s experience in Taiwan was great and I’m glad I got to read about it.

I loved this book because it was different than what I was used to. I’m used to a story — this was a story —but this was a bit like a journal. It was very descriptive, especially the parts about the food. For instance, whenever Grace wrote about soup she ate, I could almost feel it running down my throat. Whenever she mentioned sushi, my stomach rumbled and I wanted some.

This book probably would be best for kids who like Grace Lin’s other books in the series: Year of the Dog and Year of the Rat.

I give this book 4 out of 4 roses! 😉

  1. Elena, food is a great way to experience different cultures, and also dumplings are amazing.

Have you ever kept a journal when you went on a trip, or were having a new experience? Did you find it to be a challenging writing style?
