Review: A Sweet And Meaningful Story About Young John Lewis

Posted by

John Lewis. When most people hear his name, they think of a strong, brave man who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who is also a U.S. Representative for Georgia and who turned 80 a few days ago.

He is an important person in U.S. history. That’s why I wanted to review this children’s book about Rep. John Lewis during Black History Month.

Preaching to the Chickens, by Jabari Asim, is a picture book about John Lewis when he was a kid. The author writes about how young John Lewis was a hardworking child who really loved God. In the author’s note, Jabari Asim said the stories in the book were told to him by John Lewis himself.

I loved the story about how as a boy he preached to his chickens, telling them all he had learned in church. I only knew about the things John Lewis did as an adult for Civil Rights, so it’s cool that this book gives a glimpse into John Lewis’ life before he became famous. Yes, he did so many things as an adult, but the way he cared for and prayed for the chickens was truly magnificent. In fact, he once baptized all of the chickens. Obviously, he had a deep passion for Jesus and his 60 chickens and wasn’t afraid to show it.

This book is great for readers ages 5 and up. It is a sweet read and will leave a message for anyone, whether you are 7 years old or 99.

This book is so meaningful and sweet! I definitely give it 4 out of 4 roses!
